Overview:
The Prairieland Market in Salina, Kansas is re-inventing itself! We are expanding and moving to a new location in downtown Salina, with a whole different look and feel. Prairieland will be set up as a nonprofit organization to provide local, organic, and craft foods for our community, with a focus on food education and access for all. We are seeking a dynamic individual to lead this re-launch and to work with the board of directors and other volunteers in developing meaningful charitable activities to nourish our community. The successful candidate will have a passion for local food, the ability to develop and implement strategic initiatives, and excellent supervisory and communication skills. Experience in the retail grocery industry is preferred, along with a successful track record in a managerial position.

Core Responsibilities:
Oversee day to day operations of Prairieland Market
Develop and oversee the Market’s program of charitable activities
Be the “face” of the Market; promote and expand business volume
Supervise Market employees and volunteers
Ensure that the Market has sufficient inventory stocked to support sales goals
Maintain financial records and reports, working with the Market accountant
Develop and maintain relationships with local producers and vendors
Oversee the CSA program
Assist with marketing and promotion of the Market
Qualifications:
Associates degree or equivalent
Experience in the retail industry
Understanding of the goals and mission of a nonprofit organization
Successful track record in a managerial position
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Excellent customer service skills
Capacity to build strong community relationships / create excitement around the new Market
Ability to manage finances
High level of integrity, passion, and commitment to the mission of the Market
Operations:
Procure local/regional meats and produce, plus organic bulk food items. This requires tracking inventory and placing orders to maintain stocking levels
Receive stock into the point-of-sale system as it arrives from various vendors
Set prices on goods sold
Train, schedule and oversee employees and volunteers
Provide exceptional customer service
Receive and follow-up with customers on special ordering requests
Monitor emails for web orders
Keep the market clean and tidy
Perform maintenance on utilities as required
Maintain required licenses
Manage waste and keep it to a minimum
Finances:
Maintain financial records and reports (daily, weekly, and monthly) as requested by the market’s accountant
Submit financial records, reports, and payment to agencies, as needed
At the first of each month, pay vendors for their commissioned items sold in the previous month
Manage the Market’s finances, monitoring cash flow, etc.
Assist with fund-raising activities and special events
Marketing:
Create a unique store experience – great inventory displays and a positive customer experience
Build strong relationships with farmer vendors
Build strong community relationships
Attend / join social and civic groups as needed to promote market
Develop robust group of volunteers:
Prepared food cooks
Store assistance
Marketing /social media /newsletter help
Charitable Activities:
Work with board of directors to develop program of charitable activities, including educational classes and partnerships with other local non-profits (e.g. donating food, providing cooking classes)
Implement, manage, and modify as necessary
Physical Demands:
Be able to put in a full day on your feet
Be able to lift 30 pounds
